Tech in Texas History: SEMATECH Headquartered in Austin, TX
Today’s History Lesson
Hot on the heels of foreign competition, particularly from Japan, SEMATECH (Semiconductor Manufacturing TECHnology) was formed in 1987 to restore American global leadership in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Semiconductors are the main components of microprocessor chips. The formation of SEMATECH came at a time when the application of computer chips in electronic devices was taking the world by storm. With the intention of sparking collaboration between government, academia, and industry sectors, SEMATECH was called a research consortium. The facility was headquartered in Austin, Texas due to a favorable multi-million dollar incentive package in partnership between UT Austin, the City, and State government. SEMATECH’s presence in Austin contributed to the area’s emerging and rapidly growing technology industry hub.
